National Industries for the Severely Handicapped

NISH (National Industries for the Severely Handicapped) creates employment opportunities for people with severe disabilities through obtaining Federal contracts, these contracts are awarded to community based, non-for-profit agencies. These employment opportunities assist persons who are blind or have severe disabilities the chance to obtain work skills, training, commensurate wages, benefits, and allow persons with disabilities to gain greater independence and improve their quality of life.

New York Industries for the Disabled

NYSID (New York Industries for the Disabled) is an agency that was designed to secure and administer product and service contracts on behalf of non-for-profit agencies employing persons who are blind or have severe disabilities. NYSID members are approved by the State Commissioner of Education, Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities, through which the preferred source program, provides employment opportunities to New York State persons with disabilities who would otherwise find it difficult in obtaining meaningful work. The work force must maintain a ratio of 75% disabled and 25% non-disabled The New York State Preferred Source Law mandates that all state agencies, public benefit corporations, and local government participate in buying products and services through NYSID. These products and services are approved by NYS Office of General Services which meets the buying agency’s “form, function, and utility” requirements, without competitive bidding. “The intent of the law is clear…to direct the normal procurement activity of the state and local governments to benefit disabled residents through employment.”
